About
Costs isn’t just a technical speciality. At Kansei, we see the job of ensuring costs orders are made and complied with fairly and efficiently as one of the pillars of access to justice.
The expense of litigation is a key element of client decision-making—and of client concern—that practitioners must be well-equipped to deal with, in addition to a multitude of other areas.
With experience in both private practice and a busy in-house regulatory litigation practice, we have a unique insight into the practical realities and pressures of litigation, as well as the art of balancing competing client priorities within a well-rounded strategy.
Kansei Legal aims to help reduce the load on colleagues in the law, whether in helping develop strategy, advising on risks, or distilling large data sets and multifaceted problems into clear paths forward. We work collaboratively to find better ways to address costs for each matter, client, and legal team.

Why kansei?
While kansei doesn’t have a direct translation from Japanese to English, one interpretation is ‘the ability to understand a person’s feelings and perceptions’, including their sensitivity to subtle details and nuance. It is used in the phrase kansei kougaku, or ‘emotional engineering’, an engineering and product design methodology which aims to improve products and services by incorporating the user’s emotive responses and needs into the design process.
At Kansei Legal, we incorporate this philosophy into our practice of the law by focusing on the experience of practitioners we work with.
Flexibility and open-mindedness drive all aspects of our practice, including offering different ways to engage a costs lawyer to reduce stress from the outset. We’re small and tech-driven, so we move quickly and adapt to your style and systems. In addition to delivering services that are fit for purpose and of a high standard, we are proactive in ensuring you and your client understand and feel comfortable about the process and the outcome.
